Apart from recently attending a short acrylic painting course and some life drawing sessions, I have had no formal training. The life drawing sessions I have found to be invaluable in refining observation. I took up an interest in painting as a young adult but this fell by the wayside with work and family commitments. It is only since I retired that I have rekindled my passion for painting. I work in oils which I find to be the most flexible medium for my painting style and to the larger canvasses I have started using. Having tried varying subjects, I have recently found myself drawn towards seascapes, finding my inspiration in the drama of a rough sea crashing ashore. Not living near the coast I paint from sketches and photographs taken while visiting family in Cornwall where the coastline is so varied and one is never far from something of interest. I then adapt the photograph to my painting using my imagination. The sea has so much colour absorbed from what lies beneath and from the sky and although my paintings appear monochromatic, I use a varied pallet, applying brush and pallet knife. The final painting rarely represents the original photograph.
