Daniel Lightfoot

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, raised in Prince Edward Island.

My artistic journey - which I invite everyone to join, started with art lessons from Ardis Desborough at the Lefurgey Cultural Center in Summerside, PEI. In 1981 I attended the Toronto School of Art and received instruction in a variety of mediums and disciplines from established working artists in the Toronto area. Since that time I have been exploring different mediums and have come to embrace acrylics and watercolors in order to find a symbiotic relationship that anchors both of them in the experiential mindscapes of my mystical travels.

My art has moved over the years through several genres which included surrealism, fantasy and representational art. Although I still enjoy painting in those areas, my passion is for the abstract.

I moved into doing more watercolor work in abstracts, using various techniques and trying new ideas, such as rain painting, to produce the images. These techniques also transferred well into acrylics where I can give my acrylic abstracts the feel and lightness of watercolors. I have found with the abstract, I am more of a director of the medium to a point. The actual painting, the visuals and subsequently the messages which the seer takes from the image I have allowed to flow through me as a conduit. It is a very spiritual based approach to drawing the imagery from the canvas and the paint. This approach I have given the name of Form From Chaos.

Form From Chaos is also a combination of the fluidity of the watercolors and acrylic abstracts and the use of Sacred Geometry to give a sense of space and place for the viewer. I am a big proponent of using the sacred proportions of nature and the old masters in my work, the sacred geometry of creation, in order to draw the seer into that place...to stand in front of that mystic portal and to perhaps take a step through

My art is therefore an experience of the heart and soul – not the just eyes and brain, as it takes you on a micro/macro cosmic journey in and out of mystical realities held within our visible world. By utilizing the divine proportions of sacred number and geometry I endeavour to create a visually pleasing harmony of space and form. This harmony is as important to the eye as the harmony of proportions in music.

l have shown in several venues around Barrie, most notably the Rotunda at Barrie City Hall in 2009, 2012 and 2014 as a solo show of past and present acrylic works. This also resulted in an article in the Barrie Advance. I have also exhibited work at Earth and Sky Connection, Groovy Tuesdays, The Edge Gallery, Unity Market Cafe and at the gift shop in the MacLaren Art Centre.
